The new etiquette for business networking

Networking at the Institute of Place Management ConferenceThe rise in the use of on-line social media brings some interesting challenges when you meet somebody for the first time face to face in a business context. Should it be assumed that you will have checked out the other person’s on-line presence? Is it lax not to have done so as part of your preparation for a meeting? How much should you disclose without appearing to have stalked the other person?

The introductory question “How long have you been with XYZ?” now tells the other person that you have not checked them out on LinkedIn or that you are not being open. What should the new etiquette be?
