Good news for the Development Industry

The Government has announced a presumption in favour of sustainable development, to be included in its forthcoming National Planning Framework, as part of its commitment to ensure that the planning system does everything it can to support long term, sustainable economic growth.

This means that where a local plan is silent, absent or out-of-date, the default decision on developments taken by local authorities or the Secretary of State at appeal should be to grant planning permission, except where this would compromise the key sustainable development principles set out in National Planning Policy.

This is good news for the development industry and puts the onus on local authorities to have up-to-date plans against which to assess development proposals.  We now look forward to seeing what the National Planning Policy Framework says when this is published next month.
