Mike questions Bob Neill at Conservative Conference

Mike GibsonAt a fringe conference event organised by the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Bob Neill MP, Planning and Local Government Minister, said he considered it an economic necessity to simplify and speed up the planning system and thought that many of the criticisms levelled against the Government’s national planning policy framework were exaggerated.

In response to Mike’s question as to how the system would deliver the certainty and consistency craved by the development industry, Neill confirmed that the system would remain plan-led but promised to help local authorities get plans in place so as to avoid planning by appeal.  He emphasised the localism agenda and accepted that there will need to be a ‘culture change’ for those who operate the system to ensure that new development is delivered where it is needed.
