The importance of joining places together

The Hepworth Gallery

The Hepworth Gallery

We visited the new Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield. It is a very interesting, innovative building and the exhibits give an excellent insight into Barbara Hepworth’s work and life. It is a very interesting site, as the building is next to, and partly in, the River Calder.

Unfortunately the signage to the gallery and its car park is not good and it lacks connectivity to the rest of the city and the other tourist attractions. It is opposite a chapel painted by Turner but you risk life and limb crossing the road.

Major cultural and tourist attractions need to be planned with a wider context, particularly pedestrian links.
