Forgotten treasure

Some years ago I was Visiting Professor at the University of Bucharest in Romania. I was lecturing in urban regeneration and the academics and government officials were very keen to hear about Manchester’s regeneration story.

I was paid 2 million Lei and I kept the bank note. I found it recently when tidying my office and I looked it up on the internet. It seems that it was the first polymer banknote in Europe and it commemorated the 1999 total solar eclipse, as Romania was the country with the longest
duration of the eclipse.

It would appear that it is quite rare; it has two transparent windows for security.I held onto it because of my fond memories of my time in Romania, but it might be worth more than my original fee. I’m glad that I held on to it.
